The following are five tour packages that we believe would most interest the variety of tourists who visit Gjirokastra.  However, if you have other interests our Agency and tour guides are happy to work with you to design a package that best suits your interests.  All tours are available in Albanian, English, Greek, and Italian.  Other languages may be available with advance notice. 

Package One—Old Gjirokastra

Approximately 4 hours in duration

The price includes the tour, admission to the two museums on the tour, transportation as required, and a beverage of your choice.  The tour includes the following stops:

  • Topulli Square, the central point of the Old Town
  • Gjirokastra Castle, including the National Armaments Museum and the Prison
  • Orthodox Church of Saint Sotirë (1784)
  • The Mosque (1757)
  • The Ethnographic Museum, built on the site of communist dictator Enver Hoxha’s birth, the museum depicts the traditional Gjirokastra lifestyle
  • In addition, you will enjoy a brief presentation of Gjirokastra history over coffee at local café as well as a visit to the Artisan Handicrafts Center and local souvenir shop.
Package Two— Gjirokastra Culture

Approximately 8 hours in duration

The price of includes the tour, admission to the 3 museums on the tour, transportation as required, lunch with beverage and beverage of your choice for one coffee break.  The tour includes the following stops:

  • Topulli Square, the central point of the Old Town
  • Gjirokastra Castle, including the National Armaments Museum and the Prison
  • Orthodox Church of Saint Sotirë (1784)
  • The Mosque (1757)
  • The Ethnographic Museum, built on the site of communist dictator Enver Hoxha’s birth, the museum depicts the traditional Gjirokastra lifestyle
  • Skenduli House, an historic Gjirokastra home
  • Zekate House, one of the grandest examples of Gjirokastra architecture in the Ottoman style
  • The Obelisk, a monument to education with breathtaking views
  • Seven Fountains and Hamam, the restored site of a former mosque built during Ottoman times
  • In addition, you will enjoy brief presentations of Gjirokastra history and cultural monuments over coffee at local café and lunch at a local restaurant with local Gjirokastra cuisine (vegetarian options available), as well as a visit to the Artisan Handicrafts Center and local souvenir shop.
Package Three—In and Around Gjirokastra

Duration: One full day including one night at hotel

The price includes the tour, breakfast, lunch, dinner, one night at a comfortable local hotel, transportation, admission to the 3 museums on the tour and beverage of your choice during coffee breaks.  The tour includes the following stops:

  • Topulli Square, the central point of the Old Town
  • Gjirokastra Castle, including the National Armaments Museum and the Prison
  • Orthodox Church of Saint Sotirë (1784)
  • The Mosque (1757)
  • The Ethnographic Museum, built on the site of communist dictator Enver Hoxha’s birth, the museum depicts the traditional Gjirokastra lifestyle
  • Skenduli House, an historic Gjirokastra home
  • Zekate House, one of the grandest examples of Gjirokastra architecture in the Ottoman style

  • Adrianopoli (Hadrianopolis), an archaeological site of an ancient Roman city in the Drino river valley near Gjirokastra

  • In addition, you will enjoy brief presentations of Gjirokastra history and cultural monuments over coffee at local café and lunch at a local restaurant with local Gjirokastra cuisine (vegetarian options available), as well as a visit to the Artisan Handicrafts Center and local souvenir shop.

An Optional Second Day of Touring is available for those with a special interest in archaeology, cultural monuments and the history of the Gjirokastra region.  For an additional charge, you will have the opportunity to visit some of the following additional sites in the region with a second night at the hotel, transportation and all meals and coffee breaks included.

  • Libohovë
  • Sotirë, a picturesque Greek minority village on the Greek border
  • Orthodox Church of Labova e Kryqit, a sixth century Byzantine structure with largely intact iconic murals
  • Antigonea, the ruins of King Pyrrhus’ ancient city, destroyed by the Romans in 168 B.C., and now a national park
  • Bridge of Bufamese
  • Viroi Lake
  • Bektashi Teqe of Melan, a fascinating meeting house for a little-known and very liberal branch of Islam
Package Four—Fishing at Pepeli

Duration: One morning

This price includes the tour, transportation, fishing equipment and beverage of your choice during coffee break.  The tour includes fishing on Pepeli Lake, near Gjirokastra, and a tour of a little-known nearby monastery.

For those visitors interested in nature and fishing this is a great opportunity to explore some little visited areas of the Drinos Valley near Gjirokaster.  This artificial lake, one of 3 built 40 years ago for irrigation purposes, is located about 30 km from Gjirokaster, near Glina.  It is a favorite spot for local fishermen interested in catching a variety of fish.  After fishing participants can choose to walk (approximately 1 hour) or be driven to the monastery.  The monastery has been restored and is working today.  In the past it was used as a sanitarium, with treatments including being tied to olive trees and isolation in special rooms.

Package Five—Antique Stone:  a Visit to Dervician

Duration: about half a day, including lunch

This price of includes the tour, lunch, transportation, and beverage of your choice during coffee break.  This is a hiking tour and includes the following stops:

  • Panaja Monastery
  • Saint Maria Monastery
  • Saint Ann Church
  • Zaharia House
  • Canyons of Drinos Valley

For travelers interested in exploring sites off the beaten path in the beautiful and mostly unspoiled countryside, this is an excellent opportunity to visit a small local village and learn about its religious heritage.   After a 15 minute drive to the village from Gjirokastra, participants should be prepared to hike through some mountainous terrain, pine woods, streams and valleys.  After a morning of hiking, visitors will appreciate a hearty lunch of local cuisine in the village.
